About Sustainable Future Center

Vision: An engaged community, building a sustainable future for the city of Knoxville

Mission: Empower individuals and communities to improve health and resilience by fostering a

co-operative, self-reliant learning community using permaculture principles.

The Sustainable Future Center Demonstration site is located about 2 miles south of downtown Knoxville.  Some of the things you can see first-hand include: renewable energy systems, rain water harvesting, electric car charging stations, and our community garden run by volunteers.

Our garden began in 2015 as a gravel parking lot covered with Bermuda grass.  We have been diligently building soil and expanding the growing area.  We have had over 70 truckloads of wood chips dump here since 2016.  The front, middle and back growing areas are now over ½ an acre with a swale system that keeps the soil moist even during drought.  We are now in the process of expanding the managed area outside the fence to make the hills and creek part of the demonstration site experience.  We look forward to seeing you on the tour and hope that you will be inspired to join our growing community that is creating an abundant sustainable Knoxville.

What We Do:

Sustainable Future Center is a community hub for the sustainability movement in Knoxville. We provide

resources and space for people, organizations and projects to build sustainable systems, and energize, encourage and inspire community members to integrate sustainability and holistic principles into their lives.  Our approach is to empower the individual to be involved and take concrete steps today that will affect the sustainable future of our planet.

To this end, the Sustainable Future Center offers:

  • seasonal community garden

  • meeting space

  • class room and workshop space

  • kitchen

  • library

  • demonstration site

for individuals, community organizations, and other non-profits to gather and share.

This allows us to actively address issues of poverty and environmental stewardship. Here, we envision a future where Knoxville works together towards a healthier, collaborative, and sustainable future.

Through our:

  • partnerships & outreach projects

  • events & workshops

  • training seminars

  • community garden & workday programs

  • permaculture design principles

we are positioned to be a foundation of the South Knoxville community and an indispensable resource for the entire East Tennessee region.
